Clwb Camera Blaenau Ffestiniog was established on January 4, 1961. Eight members attended the first meeting and M E Breeze Jones was elected President, Mr E J Williams Secretary and Mr Glyn Derrick Owen as Chairman. The club soon increased in number - three at a time unril by 1965 there were forty members in all.
Mr Breeze Jones one of the founder members and President of the club became well known naturalist specialising in bird photogrphy. He was a member for many years of the Welsh radio programme " Byd Natur" (The World of nature) and also made several TV nature programmes visiting nature reserves, The Camargue France, Florida North America, West Canada, Majorca, Portugal and Bharatpur bird sanctuary India. He also published thirty nature books.
Mr E J Williams was first secretary and then succeeded Mr E Breeze Jones as President. Mr E J Williams was a keen member of the Blaenau Club. He spent his working life as a journalist with the Liverpool Daily Post and was a member of the Loverpool Amateur Club. He guided the Blaenau club in its infancy.
Miss E Anaethwy Williams JP succeeded Mr Williams as club President in 1973. She joined the club in 1961 a few months after its inauguration. She was an accomplished photographer and won many compotitions held annually. Her courtesy to all who came to the club was always appreciated whether they were newmembers, guests, judges or speakers. She was one of the members who embraced the "audio-visual" presentation of slides.
Mr Gwynedd Pritchard was a keen menber of the club and was responsible for the club's interest in audio-visual sequences. He died tragically in a farm tractor accident on Saturday 27 1979.
Clwb Camera Blaenau Ffestiniog has a tradition of members who photograph local events for the newspapers. Mr Gwylym Livingston Evans, one of the founder members started and his collection of photographes - around 15000 in all have been donated to the Aberystwyth archives. Then Mr Arthur Wyn Jones, a local baker, carried on the tradition and his photgraphes have also been donated. Mr Maldwyn Williams another accomplished photographer is the present press photographer.
Today we are proud to have as a member Mr Tudur Owain of Croesor. He has gained a national and international reputation with his monochrome prints and has gained special accolades in competitions in Australia, Smethwick and The London Salon. His work is annually printed in the exclusive monochrome magazine " The Best of Friends".
